What are Tube screamers? Are they like overdrive pedals? I am going to try them out at the guitar shop, but I would like to go in with a little info about them. Any advice is appreciated.

Are they made just for tube amps or do they sound good on anything?

as a former owner of a tube screamer it is one and it was a great overdirve pedal. They were desigened to work with tube amps and provide more overdriven saturation.

now they have been re-released several times since they first came out. if you talk to purists they only want once with a certin model IC (0808 chip) they stoped making them in the 80's sometime. so the originals really have gone up in price $200+. The one i had was the 1st gen re-release (no 8080 chip)

If you can get one at a good price jump on it.
