What do ya'll think of an entire album being like one 30-40 minute song but then broken up into recognizable tracks. Its a heavy metal type of album sort of like All Shall Perish or Born of Osiris. I love technicality and I think this would add a step of technicality to the album.

I think that would be an EP/LP

How would it be an LP? Also, it's getting a bit long to be an EP, but if I were to write such an album I'd probably promote it more like an EP or minor release.

I'm sure it's been done though, and released actually. I think a better idea would be to write it in sections keeping the whole thing in mind and having it fit together alsmost as one song... which would sort of be like a concept album.

Isn't an album like 80 minutes long or something?

Most albums these days are like high 30's to 40's. They can be 80mins long. But sadly allot of bands these days don't fill it. :/

an ep is typically 20 min or about 4 songs.

what bands are putting out 30 min Cd's. that sucks most i have are at least 60 min or more unless it's classic rock where they had different media.

jettru tul had a couple of albums that were just one long song but it was considered a concept album. I think it was called bricks.

Symphony X has a song that's like that. "The Oddesy" which is 24 minutes and 14 seconds long. An excellent album and truly my favourite metal band. Because they play with an orchestra. :P They're amazing live.

Springsteen did an album "Cover Me" on which the whole album is one song done different ways.

Allot of Funeral Doom Bands also fill a CD like this. Just one 70-80 min long song. IT just dosn't pull me in though, not a fan of Doom. :P

Manowar also had a 32min song split into 8 parts.

I know there are many more examples though.

Did you know?!

The longest film in the world is 80 hours long!! Some French film if I remember correctly... Of course, I've never seen it. But hey.

I just felt like getting my facts out. :D

you should make a Did You Know topic, but again it'll be a thread that will be deleted

RUSH did 2112. I'd have to say it's more of a concept but they keep the same theme througout the album.

Ever listened to Nightwish? They're my absolute favourite symphonic metal band, their album 'Once' was by far the best.

The Mars Volta's Album "Frances the Mute" contains only five songs. Two of them, "Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore" and "Casandra Gemini." Four parts-27:29, and five parts-11:08, respectively. There's a lot of ambient stuff going on, as well as the craziness Mars Volta Fans expect.

Oh yeah, I love Nightwish, Once is by far the best album. But Symphony X are much better in my opinion :P

I love all of Mars Volta's albums, they're so awesome.

In my personal opinion rather than concentrate on one 60 min song work on creating several shorter songs.

People have short attention spans, and unless you are really able to grab their attention then they will get bored after the first several minutes.

I think back to all the really great CD's I listen to that I would call classics. you know the one's i bought over and over because i wore them out, they got lost, or stolen. Every one was a good collection of songs, start to finish, none were one long song.

Listen to what other people are doing in what ever genera you making music in. I'm not saying copy them but if one long song it working for them it may work for you but otherwise it's best to follow the standard.

I don't think being different just to be different is the best approach to being noticed. Woo your listeners with your talents, and creativity you'll get noticed then

That's basically it, those long songs have songs within it - which join together. That's pretty much it. Otherwise they'd never sell. My opinion anyway.
