When I open the cd shelf on my computer then close it, it stays shut for about five seconds then opens again. The only way to keep it shut is to hold it by hand and after it tries to open the second time the light goes off and you can take your hand away. Any ideas?

I put this in the gear section because my computer is a piece of my recording gear but one of the mods can move it if it fits better somewhere else.

EDIT: I should also add that it doesn't read or wright cd's anymore.

my guess is that your cd drive is broke (not to point out the obvious)

You may be able to take it out (the cd drive) and remove the cover and see if there is something in there that's keeping it form closing. I had a CD that shatters when it was being read and had to do this.

If thats not the case you know CD/DVD rw drives are pretty cheap anymore and I think for $20 you could replace it.

@ LP,
you can get some useful information here (with pictures) on how to remove and install drives.

right im fairly good with computers and what maybe the problem is that the diode which reads the cd is either dirty or broken. or something very very trivial like the button on it is stuck on the "in" position. your best bet is probably replacing it with a better one. you can buy them very cheap of most computer custom sites.

you just get a screw driver, and dont touch any of the stuff its attached to haha. just undo the connections from the drives side, unscrew it, pull it out, and open it up.
