A grace note is a a soft note that is played immidietly prior to a hard or main note. For example:

One Measure:
e:----------||
B:----------||
G:----------|| If you are playing in 4/4 then the F# and the first G
D:----------|| could be played as 1/8th notes and the next three G
A:----------|| notes could be played as 1/4th notes. The F# would be a
E:-2/3-3-3-3|| grace note.

Another example would be trills. Lets say you play a repeated two note trill such as:

e:-7ho8po7ho8| ho=hammer on and po=pull off. The B would be the grace
B:-----------| note.
G:-----------|
D:-----------|
A:-----------|
E:-----------|

In short, a grace note is a "short" note played just before a main or longer note.
