hi, if i had a song where the guitar was in the key of Emaj, is it ok for the bass to be in the key of Cmaj?

Unfortunately no, because C does not appear in the E major scale. If you were to stick only to using the notes E, A and B then that would be fine because those notes are present in both scales but obviously that would make for a rather boring bass line! The bass in Bmaj (dominant)or Amaj (sub-dominant) would work much better because there is only one note difference between the two scales-Bmaj has the addition of A#; Amaj does not contain D#. I'm pretty sure that's how it works but anyone else reading this is more than welcome to call me a fool and give the right info. Good luck!

i dont really have anything tecnical to say but dont be afraid to work some disanance (or however you spell it) into your playing. theres no right or wrong or can i do this or can i do that in music. just play your tune and if you like it keep it. not to undermine afro raven, he knows whats up, but youd be suprised at the cool shit you find outside the box.

mmmmmmpancakes totally agree I probs should have said that before. Dissonance is a common thing in jazz fusion and works brilliantly in the right context and the right kind of backing. Yeah definitely rhcp there is no right or wrong way to do it, if you play something and you like it then definitely keep it that way. don't do something one way just cuz you feel thats how its supposed to be done. that seems to be a common problem with much of popular music these days, and why it all sounds so similar. regards, the Afro
