I skipped over alot of this thread but i think every thing will boil down to what you put into the lesson.

I know when i was going to school for computer science there were these guys who went out drinking every night and skpped class and when in class were playing UT or something else. Come end of the quarter there grades showed what they put into the class. I got staright A's and really pur forth an effort to learn every thing I can.

I don't see how guitar lessons are diffrent, if you go to a lesson the teach shows you some chords and scales and you go home and just practice the crazy train solo (what the teacher did not teach you) guess what your not going to get much benifit from the teacher and sure you may beable to rip on the carzy trains solo..but that's it.

Being on of Carl's students, I can vouch for lessons in general. I have been playing for probably 8 years, and only taken lessons for 5 months. I am leaps and bounds better after the 5 months than the past 7 years. Carl has taken all the vast amounts of info on the interweb and made me ignore it while teaching me the things that are actually important.

One great example is modal theory. That stuff is intense online, but having someone sit in front of you and show you and actually help you through it makes it priceless.

I'd advise anyone to take lessons, in anything. There is always someone better than you, why not find that person, be-friend them, and learn their knowledge?

Ah I’m sorry. Where credit’s due, I admit its partially my fault this went off topic. I just got so angry when people didn’t mention Sega or PS, I used to be a natural game freak back when I had the time, and I apologize!

Anyways, moving on. Yes! Let’s call JoshJones Jones! That makes much more sense BBT! :P

Actually I shouldn't have been bringing this topic back up...we're bound to blither away complete nonesnse again haha.

i wanna take lessons but there arnt any GOOD teachers around. i take music theory at school and thats about it though. i took lessons from an old guy in my town for a couple of months and he didnt even know what modes were. he didnt teach me shizzle. but if i find a teacher that i like i would happily take lessons.

i would strongly suggest taking lessons if you can find a good teacher. my teacher is 20 bucks per half hour (crazy) but he is really good and i've learned a lot more from him than on my own

im trying out different teachers to see if they can help and i know they can i just have to find the right one that wqill help me learn faster than playing on my own.

on the other hand i feel if i can just learn more music theory from my friend then i will become a better player.

I live in Knox-Vegas Tennessee; i charge 85 bucks (1-month) for four 1-hour lessons.
Through all this (lack-of)economy crap I've kept my fee there ...i usually go up each 5 years, but everyone is hurting these days(financially).
(+ i schedule in such a way that my more advanced students can stay "over" and extra 15 or 30 minutes)

RAWK!
