So, I've been doing a lot of studying of modern vocal arrangements, and melodic leads. Along with this, I've been working a bit on my technique. This is the child of the studying stated above. This is still a rough version of the song, as I'm working on some small parts to it... but the basic idea is here and ready to go :)

First composition of 2010... and within the first month of the year! Yay!

Another noted fact: Hitting the guitar sounds weird when you use one microphone to record everything... I need to remember to not do that so loud next time. Sort of ruined the intro lick because of the obnoxiousness that proceeds. I'm sorry! :(

Its really soulful, very expressive. Well written song, the composition quality is what jumped out at me. The recording needs some fixes though. Final verdict? Double plus good.

I need to work on my audio engineering skills... one thing I just can't get the hang of.

Thanks all for the input so far! Hopefully I can get a video of this one being played so I can get my youtube channel going again.

It's really good man. I don't know enough to offer any comments technically or about audio recording, but I do know something good when I hear it.

Yes i would say the same, you need to improve your guitar mic'n,good mics, normaly 3 are needed for recording an awesome acoustic guitar, your recording has way too much bass, and it clips a lot, just a suggestion, get a nice mic!

Yeah, nice flow in the song that makes it very pleasant to listen. Even the playing is recorded with one mic, sound is still not too bad I would say... I agree with Alex that low frequencies clips. One possible solution could be also changing guitar position when recording.

Ya, I should probably fix the recording... maybe I'll get around to it some time this weekend.

Aww Jeff I love all of your music man; it always tells a story. This one just makes me smile though. I kind of picture someone going through tough times but coming out of it on his/her own feet, staying strong.

Very nice Jeff, nice melody , very smooth and clean...just needs to be longer and I know how that goes...recording is never ending I'd like to give you some advice, I don't know what you used to record your music but I found the roland BR series works great,no mikes so you record direct, easier said then done i know, but when you record direct to the mixer you have so much control almost to much...lol it make things complicated in a diffrent way....but anyway good tune!

Recording has been fixed :)

So I got rid of my attempt to fix any impurities in the recording with software and just went with a direct playing. There is nothing added to this recording, just what the mic hears when I play :)

I use an EDIROL R-09 by Roland to record... It sounds nice when I just leave it >.

When I wrote this, my friend had told me to write a lullaby for her (hence the "Alex Lullaby" as the title.) However, as I was writing it, I had received a phone call from my friend who had just gotten out of a depression clinic. He was abusing drugs and decided he needed a semester off.

After talking with him for an hour, I sat down and wrote this song. Which is why the beginning sorta feels like it could be the beginning of a lullaby... at least in my opinion

Not knowing that situation before hand yet I still felt like that's the story you were talking about. Funny how our music can explain our emotions :D

I hope your friend gets better soon :)
