im looking for a good rock/ metal song to cover but not anything to popular that everyone already knows how to play or i know how to play. another reason i need a good song to cover is because my band is performing some songs soon and i need to know what i should play that will impress the audience.

Well, what impresses you? Then learn that.

You should never ask someone else what YOU want to learn, because it's you who's playing it. If you like it; learn it.

What I usually do when I want to find a new song to play, I'll turn on www.pandora.com and put in an artist I like... say Motion City Soundtrack. From there I just sit and do my normal every day stuff, but let pandora go in the background.

Sooner or later I'll come up and be like, that song would sound great in my style of playing! And then I go and learn a cover of it.

Learn what ever blows your socks off...I mean really? I remember sitting in guitar class in high school learning theory and playing classical pieces and thinking how much of a drag that was...It helped me with my finger picking and gave me a solid understanding of the fundamentals of musical theory...

I use my classical training for warm up and "play" what ever I "feel"...

If Old MacDonald blows you away...learn it...make it heavy add some thrash...make it jazzy...add a big band kick to it...what ever allows you to spank your inner moppet...
