yo dave, i got a question.. let say i have a progression of Em-C-Am-F (all in Key of C), and i want to use different modes in each chord changes.. Can i use the phrygian mode from Em-C, then Ionian mode from C-Am, then lastly aelion from Am-F? is that how modes work in soloing?

no you just use a different mode over each chord then , like e phrygian over Em , C ionian over C , A Aeolian over Am and F Lydian over F
not over the chord changes , but over the chords...

you could always search some books by Frank Gambale , he uses modes a lot and made some books about it..

Well if you are lazy then I suggest you look at a search engine type in modes and you get a load of them. Or better still use http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/index.php and it will give you the modes.
