A highly paid American singer who forgot the words to the Anthem of her own country. This is exactly what she is paid to do in her proffession and to do it with perfection.

FAIL

exactly.

imo the best rendition... Maybe Whitney Hustons was better but i heard it was pre recorded?

I hate all the grunting pop singers do now, to hit a note they gotta like orgasm to get to it... When she was hitting the high notes... Or missing them... I was kinda expecting a baby to fall to the ground... I mean the least she could do is get the lyrics right... I mean write it down on your arm... On the stage but dont mess um up!

Let me know when you all perform for 110,000,000 people and don't ever have nerves. I am pretty sure she did the anthem for the NBA Finals last year and didn't screw it up, I don't understand why she is getting crucified over a mistake, especially regarding knowing the words. Yes she knows the words, her nerves simply got the best of her - it happens.

Yeah. I don't know though. I thought the words forgetting was pretty lame. But even lamer than that was how she sung the song. The American national anthem is hard enough to sing as is. I fail to see how her ad lib additions add anything. People are always doing that. I dunno. What i love about the Canadian national anthem is that it's easy to sing, and everyone enjoys singing it together.

It stupid... just like this...

I thought about this for a while, i basically came to it that the lyrics was an ok mistake but the singing wasnt. Shes toured shes had a career. Everyone makes mistakes, she was a touring artist (still is) SHe should have found a good way to deal with nerves. Singers just have ways to do that... I wish she got them right, but i also wish she sounded better vocally. However as i say every year... I give her props for doing it. Even if it was awful

i have no sympathy for her,her musical career is nothing artistic, its more like a job,and shr gets paid not to screw up,just like if someone was your plumber or painter, you pay them alot of money not to screw up,and if they do you would tell them and maybe call there boss.

In Germany, no one would ever think of singing the national anthem at the end of any league-sports competition (except if our national sportsteam would be playing). Also the clips at the beginning of the game about america. Many german people were quite irritated, also my father ^^ I think its a different level of patriotism.
But I agree that she did a bad job, forgetting a part of it. Very embarassing

Admiral, I think what the NFL did about America was fine about 10 years ago, but the game is much more global now and I agree with you. If they want to market globally, then you need to reflect that in your display.

The national anthem is a bit different though. American leagues always play the anthem before every game, this was no exception except the singer messed it up. And in the NHL, they do both the US and Canadian anthems.

The national anthem is one of the hardest songs to sing vocally....

Then again ithink its time for an autotuned nation anthem...

We can get T-Pain....

Or this talking Goat

This was really new to me! Haven't seen that before. Even though I guess some other countries are doing the same (maybe Russia or China?) Its a new thing to me, but its an interesting idea!
However, in Germany you also get weird looks if you are hanging up our own countries flag in your garden. And you go to prison in Austria for denying the holocaust!
But its cool to see how other cultures relate to their country.

@ EMB: You made me spit out my water reading about TPain doing the anthem, thanks for the laugh.

@ Admiral: It really is pretty interesting to see the differences in cultures. One of the things I want to do before my time on earth has passed is to get to a World Cup match. I am not a huge fan of that sport, but the atmosphere would just be amazing. It's a must-see for me at some point. You know, when I am not spending money on guitar stuff. lol

Haha, If you mean soccer that is something you definitely have to do! And I want to come to the superbowl sometime. Prepare for a hot Worldcup, 2014 it's going to be in Brazil!

hereby you really decreased the probability that you will seriously come to the worldcup :D

hahaha, I know. Especially since my main goal for my bucket list is to create, record, and produce at elast one album by myself before I am 50. That gives me 20 years to learn guitar very well, learn bass, hopefully learn piano, buy loads of recording equipment and instruments and also my dream drum set as well (played drums for 10 years earlier in my life). So when I get to go to the World Cup, I have no clue. lol

seriously? why is this a big deal? ummm, the pittsburgh steeler's also made a few big mistakes in front of the same 11,000,000 people... nobody is saying "oh my god ben roethlisburger threw two interceptions!!!"

and honestly i didn't even notice that she messed it up.

i agree with the "pro america" crap. it made me and my brother barf. give me a break it's a football game, not some patriotic holiday. that was way over the top.

HOWEVER, it is tradition in not just the US but also canada to sing the national anthem before the game. when teams from two countries meet they sing both anthems (the visitors' first, then the home country's anthem).

so for instance, if the toronto blue jays came and played a game in st louis, they would sing "oh canada" followed by the star spangled banner.

I prefer the national anthem to be without the "vocal aerobics" It's a tough song to sing, I don't appreciate all the extra vibrato and "divaness". That's just me though.

A well sung version of the anthem can bring a tear to my eye!

Domigan,im with ya.

Who cares if she screws it,many have done it before, many will do it again and again, not just the national anthem of a country, ppl screw lyrics in their own sons,in popular songs,in guitar solos, mistakes are what makes us human

If people criticise someone is because they can achieve more than what,in this case, she has achieved, and i dont that think most of those haters or purists or whatever have done anything close to what she has done,or what the BEP or slash or Usher has done.

So yeah,thatsthe point.

I dont think an artist should get up to sing the national anthem unless they actually know it. IMO

wow i jusr realized something for the past two days the only thing we could think about to discuss is a football game, how a pop singer missed a couple of words of a song, and the blackeyed peas....i thought this was supposed to be a guitar forum we should all be ashamed of ourselves...

It wouldn't mean a thing if America was formed by peace instead of war

EDIT: Sorry, that was probably out of line

@ nullnaught, she does know the words, she has performed the anthem before. Large stages tend to make even the most seasoned performer nervous, it happens. Most people have an issue with her taking such a creative license with it, nlt messing up the words.

@ BBT, it is difficult to gain liberation from a governing body via peace. It is not as if Canadians did not have violent confrontations with the British under their rule either - it just didn't require a full-fledged war to become independent. Basically, Britain didn't want to be bothered with Canada anymore, so they didn't fight for it. If they did, you better believe the same exact thing would have been required for Canada to gain its independence as well.

I was about to write: the only fooling around with the song you should do is with the word Brave, then I thought that would be hypocritical considering Jimi Hendrix completely skewered the whole end of it...but it still sounded great, and made a patriotic song into an artistic, heartfelt statement.

So I can't complain about anybody's rendition too much. :)

on top of everything else discussed... she stumbled on the words and still sang the song. people who weren't paying attention (i was playing roller coaster tycoon on my laptop) didn't notice any discrepancies. if anything, i think it's a testament to her singing ability that she stumbled and still saved the song. as opposed to stopping and being like "oops, let me start over", or instead of mumbling along with the rhythm until getting to a part she knew...
