Yeah I don't really like them, I love folk, but I don't really like this band for whatever reason. I think its just too "happy" for my taste

Try some of these
Iron and Wine, Nick Drake Tallest Man on Earth, Mumford and Sons, City and Colour, Great Lake Swimmers, Sufjan Stevens, Monsters of Folk, The Civil Wars.

Bright Eyes and Elliott Smith aren't really folk, but theyre awesome anyway

Hopefully theres something in there you like and havn't heard before

BodomBeachTerror says:
Nick Drake Tallest Man on Earth

should be "Nick Drake, The Tallest Man on Earth"

Though, Nick Drake might of been the tallest man on earth.

That list made me feel just how irksome the whole "folk" label is. I really don't like it.

But what about Bert Jansch? any folk listed without him isn't a folk list.

Ah yeah he is also great (although I am mostly unfamiliar with him)

I guess I did mostly suggest more "popular" "folk" artists

RA: i don't get the irksome folk comment? Is folk thrown around too loosely or not enough or something else?

hmm well just to make it short the term has lost all it's meaning. It meant something when it was about a culture's traditional music like Bela Bartok's "Romanian dances" or something like the Carter Family, but not anymore. It just a superficial label that means absolutely nothing only concerned with {sonic} appearances. Thus, I find it irksome.

the comment was a side nonsense impulse of course, it's a forum after all. I didn't mean anything by it certainty not to bbt, If that's not the vibe that was given.

thanks for explaining. i'm just digging some of the afore mentioned artists and am trying to figure out what else to call someone like iron and wine. i just thought for a while and i still don't know.

i both loathe and depend on genre labels while i listen to music. that post that someone tried to start a while back was cool. it didn't get a lot of customers. it's fun for me to hear what people think about "types' or sub-genres of music

Yeah I can agree with that, I think folk is more traditional, but these days anything with an acoustic guitar and a voice gets labeled folk

Also check out Damien Rice. 9 Crimes, I Remember, and Amie are some really good songs

Well, folk is used to describe music that evolved from that traditional music. All genres evolve and change, and loads of them have lost their meaning. What does indie, or rock, or pop, or alternative really mean? That aside, Fleet Foxes: great band!
