Hey guys, sorry i haven't posted in a while, but i had a question. when i know somebody personally to be an a-hole (don't want to offend anybody with bad language), cocky, or a jerk, i find that their music mirrors that and i instantly loose interest and dislike the music no matter how technically impressive. i wanted to know if you feel the same way. do you think it is just bias from not liking the person or do you think that their music actually mirrors their personality?

I think its bias but its bias thats really hard to get over. its kind of natural to dislike anything that some one u dont like dose. thats why I dislike guns and roses (because of axl rose) and poison (because of bret michaels)

I agree, I do the same thing. That's why I can't listen to Uli Jon Roth.

It's likely normal, but I try to ignore it and just focus on the music. Just because a person is a jerk does not mean that they cannot produce quality music. One example that comes to mind when I was growing up is Metallica. Most people that don't play drums don't know what he brought to the table and how he influences so many great drummers, especially with his technique of using a set of three sixtuplets to provide emphasis to a particular beat in a song. I haven't listened to any Metallica at all post Reload, but at least in the 80s, Lars was a beast. I learned that he is quite a jerk, or at least used to be, and it still doesn't take away from his abaility to perform. With guitar, Vai is extremely flashy, arrogant, and cocky. But again, his music is amazing. So I guess it doesn't bother me too much and I can still listen to their music.

It's all bias. If you really dislike someone you hate their music.
For example I hate Slash's guts, I hate Velvet Revolver and GNR. When I learned that GNRs album Chinese Democracy had Buckethead and Robin Fink and absolutely no Slash, I stopped hating those songs and I loved them.

So if you dislike someone enough, you'll hate everything they do.

Again,One name.....Yngwie maalmsteen. The most cocky
Arrogant,Showman of them all. I personnally am not
offended by his persona,i find it refreshing. But
some people are so biased against his persona that
thaye refuse too listen too his music, and call
it soulless white noise.

Kinda like what brian said about Lars Ulrich, nobody was
doing what yngwie was doing in the 80's,he set the standard
for over-the-top guitar playing.

But a point i made in a earlier thread was
that the audience can pick up on if your
are confident,cocky,or scared,or not cofident.
That can also affect bias,so i guess an artists
persona does affect how you comprehend or like
there music.

The difference about Yngwie is that you don't have to tell me it's him. I can hear it in his playing. Thus, rendering him one of the worst songwriters of all time.

But yes, personality does shine through in music, which is what it's supposed to do. That's the point.

"Love me or hate me, both are in my favors. If you love me, I'll always be in your heart. If you hate me, I'll always be in your mind" -William Shakespeare

This is why I don't bother hating anyone. It's not worth my time. I live by principals and not personalities. I know this all sounds cliché but I really mean it. Maybe because I’m older now I don't know.

In regards to artists, sometimes I do prejudge and won’t listen to them because of what they look/dress like or their reputation. But I realize that it has nothing to do with the music they produce and so I will take a listen. If it’s good, I don’t care what their personality or reputation is. If I do care, there is something wrong with me, not them. I have to say, I really don't.

I'll make a couple opposite examples: I really like Springsteen as a person but I don't care much for his music. Also, I don't care much for Lady Gaga's appearance but she makes great music.

Agree with you Btimm, Lars is a bit of a prick but he's a pretty good drummer man. One of my favorites with just how odd some of the stuff he did was and yet how it worked for the sound(like the beat from "One"). I don't personally know him so that doesn't get in the way of me enjoying his stuff. Except with people like Axl(no voice, and a douche) I can't stand it. I like the rest of (old)GnR, but wish Axl would have shut up sometimes...

Also, it kinda reminds me of a Daniel Tosh joke.

Dave Mathews band sucks. If that offended any of you, you're the problem with our country. Because someone had a difference of opinion with you, you felt personally slighted instead of focusing on the bigger issue - why do you listen to sh!tty music?

I was raised to be suspicious about scientology, so when one of my favorite artists became known to me as a scientology guy, I couldn't wrap my heart around liking his music for over a year. :{

I love Zepplin but I don't like to watch Robert Plant perform.

It didn't make me laugh in a cynical way, it made me laugh due to amusement, I simply found the exchange to be amusing.
