I played guitar hero once. I was awful at it, so I figured that I'm alot better at real guitar than guitar hero...So I never played again. People seem to love it though.

Haha, I think it's quite fun. PPL often think that if you are good playing "real guitar" you've gotta be good playing Guitar Hero xD. But you dont even use the same muscles haha.

I'm better on a real guitar... but it does feel fun playing GH. It's satisfying when you hit loads of notes in a row.

It's just a fun game where people who can't play guitar can feel like a rock star I suppose. A lot of guitarists critisize it and say you should just play the real thing but at the end of the day... does that mean people who play fighting games should get into real fights, and nobody tells people who play driving games to go and race for real.

I think the game is awesome. I've beat the hardest song ever made. Through the Fire and Flames. I still prefer a real guitar to a video game tho.

I have thought the same thing about it as you have notim.

Notim: some people might just not have the time to play guitar - and use Guitar Hero as a fun alternative to feel like a rock star.

I understand where you're coming from - whenever I play any game I usually end up thinking "hang on, it's not realy - why am I so proud I won" etc. But then I have to remind myself that's not the point - and the point was to make a few hours fly by and have a bit of fun.

Try to play guitar on guitar hero. That's the reason why I can't stand it. If I want to listen to songs and play them on a video game, give me a controller, not some plastic shaped like a guitar to mess with my head.

Plus, the game makes me want to play real guitar.

i've never played it. the concept seems a little bit stupid though. looking through my very limited games collection, i have games where you can do stuff which you can't do in real life - games like Football Manager, GTA, Pro Evo, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Sim City, Rollercoaster Tycoon, etc etc. i just don't see the point in playing a game in which you "play" a very unrealistic guitar (5 buttons, wtf?!), when you could just go grab a proper one and start rocking out! if non-guitarists want to become a "guitar hero" then all they need to do is go down to the nearest music centre and buy a crappy second-hand strat copy for £50. it's a hell of a lot more convincing than holding a lump of plastic shaped cruedely like a les paul, and if they practise hard enough then they might just make it...

not at all. that is the beauty of games like those - you can do things, without actually doing them in real life. nothing bad's gonna happen if you rob a bank/shoot a cop/go psycho with a chainsaw in GTA; you do it in real life and you're in deep shit!

i suppose guitar hero has encouraged some people to take up the guitar, and surely that's a good thing?

Hold up - you list a skating game and a football game i na list of games where you can go and do something that you wouldn't be able to do in real life? I look at your post like this:

A skater can skate.
A guitarist can play guitar.
A non-skater can't skate.
A non-guitarist can't play guitar.

Saying that you can just go get a guitar and rock out is similar to saying you can go get a skateboard and do tricks. You need to learn it before you can compare it.

Similar to football - why can't people go out and play (this is assuming you meant pro evo soccer.

There are *so many* games that are possible in real life and people play them without any critism from others... untill it comes to a game that challanges a rather arrogant type of person (guitarists :D).

Also, games are not always about realism and immersion. Some are just for fun. Infact, I think that was the original idea behind any game.

@doz, when you play football in real life, there's just one of you, you can't control what the other players do. when you play pro evo you control all 11 players, and they do whatever you tell them to. when you skate in real life, you are limited to the environment around you. in THUG2 (the last TH game i bought) you can skate in Boston, Barcelona, Australia, New Orleans, etc. And if you bailed, it doesn't mean you have a broken wrist, and a nasty gash on your head. You just get up again and carry on skating with a few pixels of red on your cheek. Those two games I've just meantioned take something ordinary (playing football, skating) and enhance it, remove the element of danger, and put it at a higher level in a different environment. i suppose guitar hero does that same to a certain extent, but there's no hazard when playing guitar (unless you whack yourself with the headstock) unlike in football where you could get injured or suspended, and in skating where you could break a leg etc. therefore i don't see the point in playing a game where you "play" a fake guitar, when it has no obvious benefit compared to playing a real guitar.

Except that you can play on stage pretty much perfectly with less practice than real guitar? Even some people who can play guitar will never play in a band and have a 'career' like in Guitar Hero.

I agree with Doz
You don't have to be good at real guitar to play this, you don't have to be good at this to play real guitar. Although, sometimes playing real guitar can benefit you.... But not a whole lot.
