Or how you are told to play "properly" when playing a certain thing. Like they tell you to holy your pick with the "ball" of your thumb and your index. I use the tip of both fingers and it is more comfortable. Of course, i am talking about when regular picking

the problem with not following the "teacher" and doing it your own way is sometimes you develop bad habits which are harder to break, than just doing it right the first time.

possibly, i can speed pick for just a few minutes and i get out of rythum, but thats really not what i'm into. but it's best for do it the "right" way at first. when you get a lot better you can do it your own way.

I'm boned then... Lol.. I do find it kinda more comfortable to play with 3 fingers on it, thumb index and middle of course. I find I do have more control than I do if I hold it the 'normal' way

i just want to add...telecrater-if it makes you feel better-speed picking with any degree of prolonged acuracy, i find is one of the more difficult techniques to learn. awhile ago, i could pick a zillion miles per hour, but it wasnt till i heard myself play, did i realize how terrible i sounded. now, through the slow boring existence of practicing, i've become very decent at speed picking. and a note to guitarboy...ive noticed you've mentioned yourself as a "good guitar" player all over this forum. you've been playing for two years or there abouts. i think, for your own good, stifle your ego a bit and take a look at all of your favorite guitarists (hopefully some with some skill), and think about how many years they've been playing. then think about how many years you've been playing.

Lol I thought I was a good guitarist when I learned pentatonics. Now that I listen to many styles of music with guitar and understand how it is played, I can call myself an good Intermediate guitar player. I want to point out that many guitar players who produce records are'nt pros. The only pro I've heard is Andres Segovia.Tom Morello is not a great guitar player:D

Well, I consider myself 'good' for the amount of years I was playing, 2 years is not long at all. But for only playing 2 years, I am a decent player. I am not Dimebag, but it will do for now. I like to keep a positive attitude instead of thinking like "Oh man I suck so bad I hate it wah wah wah." If I'm not positive... I am going nowhere, that's how I look at it.

And there is a such thing as being "Good within your genre" meaning a genre you are best at.. I am best at metal, but now crazy-ass soloing like Dethklok, Slayer, etc.

League, what do you mean by this?

league says:

I figured that your pro when people pay you to play and that is your day job. Part of that would be making records.

what do you mean Tom is not a great guitar player? ok maybe your right, he is not great put he's original. when rage first came out i had never herd anything like it. I guess I'm more impressed with someone original than someone who's great.

i think Tom is an excellent player...you dont have to shred a million miles an hours to be a great player. check out Larry Carlton or Eric Clapton, SRV and Jeff Beck. None of those guys can really shred, but they are all incredible players.

Yeah, there's so much more to it than speed and even complexity.

Yeah really though, Eric Clapton is one of my favorite guitarists, he's amazing. And you do NOT have to be fast to be good. I am not the fastest, I just play.

Well.... SRV does shred. Tom Morello is kind of original but You gotta remember a lot of the late grunge and Metal sounded similar to his style. I don't just like shredding guitar. In my opinion, Morello uses the Pentatonics way too much to create songs. Some RATM songs were good but if you listened to the whole album you noticed they sounded similar. Recently I noticed an Audioslave song that had an intro riff similar to Cowboys from Hell. Tom Morello may be original, but not with guitar technique. At that point are you a great guiarist?

I don't really like RATM honestly. They are too repetitive... It's like the same lyric and instrument riffs over and over for each and every verse.. and chorus.. Only the solos are good... Sometimes. But I do like Killing In The Name Of ... Plus I am more of a 80`s rock type of guy

I have been playing....for about three and a half years. I play like 2-3 hours a day. I really don't know my skill level, mainly because I have been working on Jason Becker's Altitudes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wFoSbjXB68 (copy and paste) and I have gotten halfway through. if you listen to the whole song, I am at where the first set of sweep picking ends. I am still learning the rest. So i really don't know my skill, I know theory, scales, and I have also started playing piano. And i don't like RATM either.

....I disagree GuitarBoy... some songs are repetative... but there are a lot that aren't. If I had to choose the most repetative RATM song then it'd definitely be Killing In The Name Of.

Lol yeah Doz disagree with me cause I'm a kid. lol jk
Well yeah it is really repetitive but I like the guitar and mainly the heavy distortion parts for verses and chorus.

Name 3 songs then that aren't repetitive and I will check them out and maybe change my opinion.

I'll just list some good ones without sifting through to see how many times something is repeate... but listen to Know Your Enemy, Wake Up and Bombtrack. They're all on the same album (and the same album as Killing In The Name Of), so you could just torrent that or something. It's self titled.

Okay, maybe I will change my opinion on them. Maybe I really shouldn't say I like or don't like a band because I only heard two songs. Maybe five songs would be a better judgment point. I only heard Killing/Name, and I think Testify which is a bit repetitive.
Know your Enemy is a really cool song. Maybe I will check out more songs by them in a little while.

Yeah. Like, I didn't care for Heart, from hearing Tattooed Love Boys. I don't like it. but I heard Barracuda and I like them more now.
(Yes, guitar hero songs but I didn't listen to anything after tattooed love boys until barracuda)
